Humphry Davy
Humphry Davy was born in Penzance in 1778. He experimented with a plethora of new gases and discovered the anesthetic effect of laughing gas.
Davy published his research in his book Researches, Chemical and Philosophical. This led to Humphry being appointed as a lecturer. He was a great teacher and his lectures brought in many large audiences.
In 1806 Humphry Davy published On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity. The following year he discovered that the alkalis and alkaline earths are compound substances formed by oxygen united with metallic bases.
